第2次世界大戦後70年を迎え、歴史学をはじめ、政治学や国際関係学分野でも多様な太平洋戦争研究が盛んになっていますが、公文書や様々な一次資料を扱いながらこの戦争に至った経緯や原因などに関する重要な歴史研究が展開している一方、この時代に海外からどのような視線が日本や極東アジアに向けられ、戦時色の強まるこの地域に関して世界全体でどのような議論がなされていたのかについて、同時代に海外で読まれていた文献を検証しての研究はまだ充分になされてはいないと言えます。本コレクションは、今後国内外でより深い研究対象となると思われるこのテーマに関しての文献を広く集め、時代別に2回配本、各6巻、合計12巻(予定)の研究資料集として提供するものです。
第1回配本ではヴェルサイユ条約の締結される1919年前後から、満州事変を経て日中戦争が勃発し太平洋戦争にいたる戦前期に発表された文献のコレクションで、政治家、外交官や軍人、歴史家や研究者など立場の異なる著者による雑誌記事や英文書籍、計90点を収録します。米国やヨーロッパでの議論だけでなく、東アジアの外に向け、中国で発表された稀少な英語資料や、対アジア政策を西洋に宣伝する日本からの発信も多数含み、戦前期の海外での議論がグローバルに浮かび上がるよう編集されています。元ICU教授で現在もオックスフォード大学のVisiting Student Programmeで教鞭をとる編者の詳しい解説に加え、ロンドン・スクール・オブ・エコノミックスのアンソニー・ベストの序文入りです。
