このたび、『英国のジャポニスム―ヴィクトリア朝・エドワード朝雑誌・新聞記事集成』が刊行の運びとなった。言うまでもなく、19世紀の英国は、中国をはじめとするアジアへの経済的・外交的な高い関心のもとに、多くの人材を派遣し、情報収集に努めた。日本の鎖国政策はそうした英国の姿勢に対して長い間高い壁であり続けたのだが、彼らは開国前後には他の西欧諸国に先んじていち早く多くの情報を得、またその分析に取り組んでいる。今回刊行される論文や記事は、日本では入手できにくい雑誌や新聞を含み、日本の開国前後から日英博覧会が行われた1910年頃までをターゲットに、長い期間の英国の日本文化、日本美術観を読み解くための、極めて有効な試みと言えよう。
日本の文物が流入して、いち早くジャポニスムを展開したのも英国はフランスと並んで最も早い国の一つだった。外交官や旅行者として来日し、質の高いコレクションを形成した人々のみならず、お雇いとして日本に生活の拠点をもち本格的に日本美術を学んだアンダーソンのような人物もいて、いっぽう美術家たちはその強い好奇心から新しい造形原理をかぎつけた。
このシリーズで、英国の人々が日本と日本美術に何を見、どんなジャポニスムを生みだしたのか、さらに研究が深まることを期待する。そしてこれだけの貴重な資料を惜しみなく提供して下さった小野文子氏に心から感謝したい。
